Beltane

The Wheel turns, the years go on.

The weather today matches my mood. It's stormy, rain and wind raging, with sudden short breaks of brilliant sun quickly engulfed by the clouds.

Usually Beltane is a day of rejoicing, of welcoming Spring. Today, both inside and out, it seems like Spring will never come. It's cold and wet, and feels much more like Feb. than May. My house is cluttered with porch furniture, waiting for a day warm and dry enough to finish the projects started the weekend before last, when the warmth and sun fooled me into thinking that there would be time enough to finish before the rain came again.

That's the problem. There's never enough time before the rain comes again.

Good-bye, Squire Jacques/Nick Dickhut. You went where your country sent you, did your duty and made the ultimate sacrifice. I wish I'd had more time to know you.

Got up at 5 am to see The Man off to work. It was 32 degrees and raining, with the rain freezing as soon as it hit the 8 inches of snow on the ground. It had evidently been doing this for some time, as there was a 1/2 inch thick layer of ice on everything. Wade's taking the bus route off the hill, so, since he made it off our side street, his commute should be ok, and he's got studded tires, which is about as good as you can get on ice.

The milkman didn't make it here yesterday. I've got an email in to find out if he's going to deliver today, or if I need to put on my boots, find my wheelie cart, and walk out to the store. Luckily, the co-op is only 5 blocks away.

About 8 inches of snow here and still snowing. I don't have anywhere to go, so I'm enjoying it, but I really feel for Wade. He has to go to work, snow or not, and if any of his people can't make it in, he may have to cover their shifts. Although, since they all live closer to work than we do, it's really tough to make that excuse.

My sekrit santa was Cedric, who is a naughty man for fooling me. He gave me one of Dame Ellen's wonderful awls. Thank you so much!

In no particular order:

I'm thankful for my husband.  The best decision I ever made was to say "yes".
I'm thankful that, even though he has to work today, he has a job.
I'm thankful for my children, who have both turned out to be very cool people.
I'm thankful for my friends, who are there even when I am depressed and hide from the world.
I'm thankful for my family, and that I get along with them for the most part.
I'm thankful for the gift of music, which has made my life so much better.
I'm thankful for the gift of art, in all its myriad forms.
I'm thankful for the beauty and bounty of the earth, which sustains body and soul.

Oh, and I'm especially thankful for the spectacular sunrise next to Mount Rainier this morning, and that it was visible from my bedroom window.  Way to go, Mom.

Fantasia, followed closely by The Aristocats and Sleeping Beauty.

I finished the abstract and bio for the Florence Costume Colloquium and sent it off.  Nothing like getting it done at the last minute.  Next up: the personal statement for my college applications.  If my paper is accepted, I'll be taking a 2 week vacation right in the middle of fall quarter.  Sigh.

Steamcon was amazing, even though I forgot my camera so no costume pics for me.

The good: All my panels were very well attended, the panels I went to were interesting and best of all, the between panel and late night random conversations were stellar.  Intelligent, witty, thought provoking and with the subject matter generator set on random.

The meh:  I really need a much bigger room for most of my panels.  Also, 1 hour is not long enough for the Victorian Underwear panel.  I continued to lecture for 45 minutes in the hallway after the panel to more than a dozen people.

The ugly:  Hassle with the hotel over paying cash.  It all worked out, but I'm really tired of dealing with companies who make it so hard to NOT use a credit card.  Also, I'm sick.  Scratchy throat, stuffy head, etc.

I haven't accessed LJ or Facebook since last Thurs. and I'm not going to even try to read all the entries since then, so if you think I need to see something, let me know.

I need some help, Oh LJ Hivemind.  I like well made horror films.  (I like reading horror as well, but I can find a lot of books).  I DO NOT enjoy the run of the mill, "Friday the 13th/Halloween/Saw/Texas Chainsaw Massacre" type slasher flick.  They bore me, and while I have a pretty strong stomach, I don't enjoy gore unless it's well-done and integral to the plot.  I'm also not entertained by the recent trend of "The Blair Witch Project/Paranormal" faux-documentary.  Again, boring.

Movies I do like include:  Let the Right One In, The Crow, Lost Boys, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Sleepy Hollow, The Sixth Sense, The Wicker Man, and The Skeleton Key.

So, any suggestions?

Gwalchgwyn and I already have our requests in to become pampered house cats. He's going to be a large tuxedo black and white, and I'm going to be either a Bengal or an Occicat. I figure at a maximum life span of 18-20 years, that will be a nice, relaxing break from being a human.

Drea-con

I'm going to need a lot more time to process this weekend before I write about it in depth, if indeed I do.  Suffice it to say that my traveling companions are the best, Drea was great, the company and food rocked, and I want to do it again SOON.

I'm also really inspired to sew more garb.  However, this weekend confirmed for me that my judgement of historical costume construction is good enough to tackle two completely out of period research projects and possibly write them up for publication.  Keep your fingers crossed that my inspiration sticks around to allow my health to catch up---I'm really exhausted.

Well, my main sewing machine died yesterday, so it has to go into the shop. I hope I can afford the fix.  Luckily, my old machine, which I gave to Daugher Number Two, is living here while she's in Korea, so I can use it.  I really need to get the 1900 Singer electric a replacement box or get the pressure foot lifter replaced on the treadle so I can use those.  While I'm doing more and more handsewing, there's still some things that are better by machine.

I am a very unhappy crow tonight.  Gwalchgwyn and I decided tonight that we really need to be grown-ups and not go to Coronation this weekend.  So, if you're expecting to see me, I won't be there.

Have fun without me, that seems to be the way this summer's going.

Fireworks

I feel a bit hypocritical in my attitude toward fireworks. On one hand, I come from a long line of rednecks people who thought nothing of blowing up stumps with dynamite or shooting blanks to make noise on the 4th. To be fair, however, these same people knew how to handle said explosives, and set a good long fuze, usually across a 40 acre field, and made sure there was no one or thing around to be hurt. I'll tell you what, nothing beats hot-loading a Kentucky flintlock and shooting it off for noise. M-80s just don't do it.

In addition, I REALLY like explosions.

However, I now live in the city. Not suburbs, city. My next door neighbor's house is literally 5 feet from mine. I have also seen some truly stupendous feats of stupidity with fireworks, done with no thought of any of the potential consequences to self or others. I've had firecrackers thrown at me. We've had fires every year. A few years ago, someone not very far from here set off a bottle rocket that went into a house window, setting it on fire. The fire ended up being minor, but the homeowner had a heart attack while evacuating his disabled wife, and died. So, when the city of Tacoma decided enough was enough and banned all fireworks within the city, I supported it wholeheartedly.

Has the ban gotten rid of all firework? No, but the number of fires and injuries are down, and the 4th seems to be the only day that folks are setting off fireworks, instead of least a week before and after, like before. Last night it was bad enough that we had to close the window (this old house is pretty sound proof) and there were still a couple of booms that rattled the place. Note to the idiot responsible: setting off M-80s after 2 am on a weeknight, even if it is the 4th, doesn't make you patriotic, it makes you a douche.

All in all, it was still better than St. Patrick's Day.
