I need some help, Oh LJ Hivemind.  I like well made horror films.  (I like reading horror as well, but I can find a lot of books).  I DO NOT enjoy the run of the mill, "Friday the 13th/Halloween/Saw/Texas Chainsaw Massacre" type slasher flick.  They bore me, and while I have a pretty strong stomach, I don't enjoy gore unless it's well-done and integral to the plot.  I'm also not entertained by the recent trend of "The Blair Witch Project/Paranormal" faux-documentary.  Again, boring.

Movies I do like include:  Let the Right One In, The Crow, Lost Boys, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Sleepy Hollow, The Sixth Sense, The Wicker Man, and The Skeleton Key.

So, any suggestions?

Silents. --> Nosferatu; The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and the like.
I vastly prefer those to the new horror flicks such as Saw. They engage your brain/imagination instead of just being bloody/yucky.

I do, too, but I've seen most of those. There are some really good new films, like "The Skeleton Key" that are well-made, look beautiful and are genuinely scarey without the gore, and I'm hoping to find more. The problem I'm having is when I look through the horror genre, it's hard to tell what will be good from the garbage.

I was going to jump in and recommend my favorite cheesy 'haunted house' movies, but I see that you don't like quasi-documentary stuff. Rats. See, I like 'em because they're cheesy ;> However, An American Haunting (2006) is a good hybrid of ghost story and Jacksonian costume. It's an uneven retelling of the Bell Witch story, but visually, I liked it.

P.S. BOO!

I was bored by the Amityville Horror and its various cousins, and the film style of The Blair Witch Project gave me a headache (and I found it rather boring as well), but I've heard good things about An American Haunting.

BOO! back at you.

The Ring, but it might be too paranormally for you. scared the crap out of me, and it was BEAUTIFUL as it did it.

I got to see it with tall gothy former apprentice boy. which was awesome...we both got scared silly but he could make it a bit more detatched talking about the visual effects, etc.

I'm glad I saw it in the theater tho....seeing it on DVD? eek!

The Mummy with Boris Karloff. It's one of the creepiest movies I've ever seen!

Near Dark (vampires), Ginger Snaps, Dog Soldiers (both werewolf films).

There is gore in all of these films, but it isn't gratuitous. They're all extremely well done.
