The Bad.

We got home about 4 yesterday. We started unpacking the car, and were not greeted by the cat. Ok, the dog is at a friend's until later today, and the cat has been spending a lot of time sleeping, so I didn't think much of it at first. But, when I went to take a couple of things into the bathroom, he was laying on the floor dead. He seemed very peaceful, as if he had just laid down, and it's not like I hadn't been expecting this, but it still hurts that I wasn't here when he died. Of course, he was probably waiting to be alone, like some cats do. We wrapped him up and laid him securely on the back sunporch, and we will be having his funeral later today, after we retrieve the dog and let her see him.

Goodbye, Su Miao. You were the best of cat companions and a Good Cat. I miss you so much.

He probably was waiting for some alone time to let it happen - my first cat didn't get any alone time at our house, so he just disappeared one day, long after we had expected him to go.

I think that's probably the case. This was not unexpected at all. He was 19+ years old, and had been failing for most of the last 6 months. Our cat watcher spent quite a bit of time with him Sunday, and had reported that he had had trouble jumping up to get to his food dish, so it had been placed on the floor (impossible when the dog's around. I'm actually happier that he went like this than if I had had to decide to put him down.

Thank you. While this is certainly not the worst thing to happen this holiday season (that would have to be my mom's stroke), I think losing my cat will affect me the most.
