And, after all the angst, Dad checked himself out of the nursing home this morning. This is after assuring me yesterday afternoon that it was where he wanted to be and that everything was fine. I think at this point, I just have to walk away from the situation, let them deal with it as they will, and just go visit when I can. I really can't take any more of this emotional whiplash.

I'm beginning to think that all three of my parents have lost their minds. It's looking more and more like both my mother and my stepmother have some sort of dementia, in addition to mom's now comfirmed stroke, and I have no idea what's up with my father.

When my elderly parents were difficult like this, I thought the only thing good was after seeing their behaviors, I vowed to not put my own children through this.

When my grandmother was like this, my mother told us to slap her if she ever acted like her. There are times when I'm really tempted, or at least, to remind her of what she said. Of course, I know that it's nothing she's doing on purpose.

It's not the optimal decision but it's his decision. I am sorry you are hurting because you know he won't get as good care this way. I am not putting it in the right words but a social worker friend told me it was a gift for me to accept my own dad's terrible decisions regarding his care. He got to feel like he had control which was important.
This stuff is heartbreaking. I am so sorry.
