Scent reverie

Imagine, if you will, a top note of spearmint.  Not the nasty toothpaste scent, but like the one released when you pass a bed of mint and brush your hand over it.  Immediately under that, the best dark Jamaican rum with tabac blonde following close behind.  The base is elusive, a dry, woodsy note, not as warm as sandalwood nor as resiny as cedar, but very lovely.

That was what the gentleman sitting next to me on the bus smelled like. I reckon in his case it was a combination of cologne, chewing gum and pipe tobacco, but I think it would make a lovely perfume, or room scent.

...the base note is vetiver. It is an elusive smell, woodsy and mannish, but has a little smoke to it as well.

. . . too bad that didn't carry thorugh to the maisma of choking blue smoke clinging to the ceiling of the living room every morning when I got up. Occasionally he would sit there undisturbed, smoking pipe after pipe, long enough that the pall was low enough for Ralphie to brush it with the tip of his tail and leave an upside-down wake just like a motor boat. That was how I realized where the inspiration for the tracery in art nouveau comes from, the smoke rising from a snuffed candle or cigarette.

I've actually heard it said that that tracery was an artistic interpretation of smoke from an opium pipe.
